At Legacy Physical Therapy, we utilize Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy to help patients build muscle strength, prevent atrophy, and speed up rehabilitation—all while using significantly lighter weights. It is an ideal treatment for post-surgical recovery, joint pain, or severe weakness where heavy strength training isn’t an option.
How BFR Therapy Works
BFR uses a specialized compression cuff (similar to a blood pressure cuff) placed at the upper arm or thigh. The cuff safely restricts venous blood flow out of the limb while maintaining arterial inflow into the muscle.
By performing low-intensity exercises under these conditions, your muscles work in a localized anaerobic environment. This stimulates the release of growth hormones and builds muscle mass as if you were lifting heavy weights, but with minimal strain on your joints and healing tissues.
Key Benefits of BFR
Faster Recovery: Maintains and builds muscle mass during early-phase post-op rehabilitation.
Joint-Friendly Strength Gains: Achieves muscle hypertrophy using only 20–30% of your maximum effort.
Prevents Muscle Atrophy: Protects strength during non-weight-bearing or restricted movement periods.
Improved Systemic Healing: Stimulates local cellular responses and growth factors to accelerate tissue repair.
Conditions That Benefit Most
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation: ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repairs, total joint replacements, and Achilles repairs.
Tendinopathies & Joint Osteoarthritis: Knee, hip, or shoulder pain that prevents heavy weightlifting.
Acute Muscle Strains & Ligament Sprains: Early rehabilitation when heavy loading is contraindicated.
Athletic Performance & Endurance: Speeding up local muscle recovery and strength acquisition without taxing joints.
What to Expect
Personalized Pressure Settings: Your physical therapist calculates your precise limb occlusion pressure (LOP) to ensure a safe, customized fit.
Targeted Protocol: You’ll perform light exercises (such as leg raises, light squats, or arm curls) in brief, high-rep intervals while wearing the cuffs.
Safe & Monitored: Treatments are fully supervised by a certified PT to ensure comfort, safety, and maximum functional results.
